First, you will take any medications that are prescribed to you at the nurses’ station, then either meet up in the cafeteria to eat a healthy and well-rounded breakfast with your peers or make breakfast in your suite. After you finish that, you may have early morning meetings that consist of yoga or meditation to help get your mind right before the day begins.

Individual Therapy

Once you complete breakfast and your morning meditations, you may move on to group or individual therapy. Individual therapy is when you get to speak one on one with your counselor about the root causes of your addiction and any co-occurring disorders you might have.

Forms of individual therapy used in addiction treatment include:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Contingency management
  • Community reinforcement plus vouchers
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Motivational interviewing
  • The matrix model
  • 12-step facilitation therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most common form of individual therapy used in addiction treatment programs. Group Therapy

This time allows you to decompress from the therapy sessions you engaged in, as they can be a bit overwhelming at times. It also gives you an opportunity to ground yourself and prepare for the last meeting of the day.

12 Step Meetings

After you eat dinner, there may be one last short session to attend. While some rehab programs allow this portion of the day to be optional, it is highly recommended. During this time, you will attend a 12-step meeting, which is basically a support program for individuals recovering from addiction and alcoholism.

These meetings provide a safe and respectful setting for you to interact with other recovering addicts and alcoholics. Many meetings have speakers who share their addiction and recovery stories, providing you with a way to relate to others and realize you are not alone.

After the 12-step meeting is over, you will be encouraged to get an early night’s sleep. Having a healthy sleep routine can help you overcome any stress or anxiety you are feeling about recovery from addiction.
